Picture This Post

Calendar Manager

June 2021 - May 2023 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

Picture this Post allowed me to contribute on my time, and in many different ways. There are a lot of opportunities to explore different positions (editor, publisher, etc), and they work with your schedule. I started out as a publisher during the peak of Covid, and was able to devote more time to publishing and editing. When I returned to school, I did not have as much time to edit and publish the different articles, but I was able to still contribute by uploading different press lease events to the calendar. Overall, I was really able to gain insight as to how to run a cultural magazine, and learn about the different cultural events happening across the world.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be transparent and realistic with the time you are able to devote towards your position. Be sure to communicate, and if there is something in particular that interests you, speak up! There have been interns who have been interested in very specific art mediums/themes and PTP has always welcomed new ideas!

New York Theater News Manager/Super Editor

May 2021 • Maple Shade, NJ

What I liked

There are so many things I like about volunteering for Picture This Post! You can work on your own time and focus on what you enjoy. All of the volunteers are very nice and helpful, and my supervisor is very hands-on and makes everyone feel like family. There are so many opportunities to try something new, to broaden your skills, along with broadening your interests!

What I wish was different

Genuinely, I wish I just had more time to start more projects. I would love to write album and book reviews, but it gets difficult sometimes because of my other job or just life in general.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share about this experience would be to seriously just have fun with it! There are deadlines for most tasks, but they're not hard to meet, if you stay on top of everything and make sure every piece of information is correct. Listening to music is essential for me, and volunteering for Picture This Post allows me to do that, while still being productive and getting my work done.

Social Media Manager

January - August 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved how flexible the schedule was, and how willing Amy (the editor) was to teach! I felt like I learned quickly because there were so many resources in the form of other interns and instructions written by previous interns. I loved that I felt like all of my work was directly helpful, and that each task was beneficial while also being a learning experience. There's also plenty of opportuntiy to choose what you would like to do, whether it's writing or social media strategy. One of my favorite internship experiences :)

What I wish was different

Advice

- Absolutely be prepared to manage your time - set reminders and alarms. - Turn on your attention to detail - There will probably be a lot of learning material to read/watch, which is helpful, but don't feel overwhelmed if a lot of it is hard to conceptualize. You might do better when someone is actually showing you how to do it youself with a real example.

Museum & Global Arts Content Curator

July 2022 • Davis, CA

What I liked

As a content curator, I have a lot of freedom to pursue and create the type of content that I'm interested in, all while getting lots of support and guidance to create better and more refined content. I especially appreciate getting tips and lots of blueprints/ideas on approaching new concepts, such as creating interview articles and all the steps involved, such as reaching out to interviewees or organizations, formulating questions to ask, and turning it all into a cohesive article. I also really loved the flexibility with Picture This Post. As it's an all volunteer team, it's understood that everyone has other things in their schedule going on and everyone is very flexible and there isn't too much pressure to crank out unreasonable amounts of content.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be proactive and take advantage of the opportunity! Reaching out to artists, galleries, museums, and curators has been super helpful for my network and knowledge of the scene. I think it's been much easier to reach out to these people and organizations not only from the guidance from working at Picture This Post, but also reaching out as a representative of the magazine definitely helps get responses and conversations going much more easily. Also, taking initiative in communicating, not just with organizations you're working with, but also internally, is super important. It can be easy to get lost or feel like you're on your own especially since it's all remote, but it's super easy to request a meeting to talk things over or get some advice when needed, as long as you reach out and ask.

National Calendar Manager

December 2021 • Campbell, CA

What I liked

As a calendar manager I learned a lot about the ins and outs of running an online culture magazine and there was a diverse spectrum of tasks I could do that prevented the experience from becoming routine or boring. But in addition to that, I also have an open invitation, if I am willing to learn, to dip into other areas of the magazine and help with other tasks and projects outside of managing calendar entries. For example, from time to time I also help with training new volunteers and making instructional videos which is another satisfying aspect of this experience for me because of my interest in teaching. Once you get the hang of how the site works, you can also express your creativity and innovative ideas to further the aims of the magazine and be involved or lead projects with the editor of the site and other volunteers. One other aspect of my volunteer experience that I really like is the flexibility. Once I learned what to do, whatever time of day or night it is, all I need is an internet connection to volunteer and I can choose to work for 10-20 minute periods spread across the day, or work on something for an hour straight. Another aspect I really appreciate about my volunteer experience is the quick response to my emails asking questions or requesting clarification on something. I have been volunteering since 2021 and since the beginning up until now I have had a lot of questions and for the vast majority of them I have received help in less than 24 hours.

What I wish was different

Advice

My biggest advice for volunteering at Picture This Post is to communicate. It can be messy or confusing but once you get used to it, the process becomes so much easier for yourself and the Picture This Post team. If communicating through email is making things more confusing, request a zoom meeting, do not underestimate how much clearer things can become when questions can be asked right at the moment the confusion starts. To this day, and after many correspondences, countless zoom meetings, asking so so so so many questions, and being met with patience and tons of encouragement, sometimes I still feel embarrassed and uneasy about communicating certain things, asking questions or asking for help with something, but I continue to do it and I continue to be rewarded with direct responses/answers and ease of mind.

Art Content Curator

June - September 2022 • Berkeley, CA

What I liked

I liked that I could write about the topics that I am passionate for. The internship was tailored towards my interest. I received a lot of training in making contacts with artists/museums, and framing my articles. I learned to write while considering the readers. The work hour was flexible. I gained a lot of experience in journalism, communication, and web design.

What I wish was different

That meetings with other staff members can be more organized. But overall, it was great to connect with others through emails.

Advice

I suggest that applicants have a specific area of interest within arts and culture. It would be great if you have already spent some time to investigate in a specific branch of your topic of choice. You don't have to know everything about the area you choose, e.g. film, but if you have passion about a specific kind of film - film of a certain culture, surealist film, etc, you would bring a unique voice to Picture This Post.

Assistant Music Review Editor

January 2021 - December 2022 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I was able to focus in on topics that interested in me, which allowed me to be interested in what I was writing about. I was also able to develop the music review section and expand it to allow other writers who were interested in music to write about a topic they loved. I was also able to develop my writing skills and write in a new style that will benefit me in the future.

Advice

Do not be afraid to dive in. Find a topic you are interested in and see what is out there that you could write about.

Writer

June 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I got the chance to tailor my experience to what I was interested in. I was able to review/preview films, galleries, and books. I also got the opportunity to do interviews which I didn't know I would be able to when I first applied!

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I would love to watch performances or view galleries in person, but with the pandemic, that's currently not really possible.

Advice

Be ready to adapt to a new writing style! PTP loves descriptive writing which I wasn't used to, but over time I was able to improve my writing skills. Also, make sure to be communicative - this is important as it is all virtual.

Museum Editorial Assistant

June - September 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I liked doing all the business communications and writing. This internship has also allowed me further writing opportunities at the company, which I can add to my portfolio.

What I wish was different

Since it is an online internship, writing work stint reports after every time I worked got kind of annoying. The editor was at times unorganized and asked me times to send her template letters I had sent her a week prior which got frustrating.

Advice

Stay organized!
