Virginia Service and Conservation Corps Career Development Program

The Virginia State Parks system runs the Virginia Service and Conservation Corps, an AmeriCorps service program that places members in parks to serve in different capacities. Members receive professional training and guidance in the roles of Park Management, Resource Management, or Interpretation.
We are currently recruiting for our Career Development Program, which begins in January and continues through the end of September. Participants in this program serve at one of our 38 Virginia State Parks in a park management or resource management role. Individuals interested in learning how to operate a state park will find a place in our Park Operations Track. These members will receive training in park administration, visitor experience management, grounds and facilities maintenance, and resource management tasks. If you are more interested in serving in the field on a daily basis, you can find a place in the Resource Management track. These members learn all about the management of natural resources in Virginia State Parks, and participate in controlled burns, invasive species removal, monitor and build habitats, and mark park boundaries.
We’re looking for members that are willing to learn and comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. In addition, you should be a self starter and be able to communicate effectively with park staff and guests. Benefits of serving in the VSCC include First Aid/CPR/AED training, Wilderness First Aid Training, Fire Training, Pesticide Application Certification, Sawyer Training, and Certified Interpretive Guide Training. In addition, members will have the opportunity to participate in monthly all program calls as well as Life After AmeriCorps training that includes a resume workshop and mock interview with Virginia State Parks staff. Members will serve from January 20,2021 to September 22,2021. All service members are eligible to receive the Segal Education Award at the successful completion of service, which can be used for student tuition payments, including paying off student loans.
Please remember that this is a service opportunity, not employment or an internship. We do allow service members to use the experience for college credit if their professor/university allows it.
