Apple Development Team (Service-Learning, Remote Only Due To COVID-19)

NOTE: This service-learning posting complies with California Assembly Bill 5 to amend Section 3351 of, and to add Section 2750.3 to, the Labor Code, and to amend Sections 606.5 and 621 of the Unemployment Insurance Code, relating to employment.

Eligibility:

Pursuant to California Labor Code 1720.4(a), "'volunteer' means an individual who performs work for civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons for a public agency or corporation qualified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a tax-exempt organization, without promise, expectation, or receipt of any compensation for work performed," and California Labor Code 1720.4(a)(1), "An individual shall be considered a volunteer only when his or her services are offered freely and without pressure and coercion, direct or implied, from [CA All-America Team, Inc.,] an employer."

Summary:

Most college students are missing out on traditional internships this year due to COVID-19, shelter-in-place orders, and social distancing requirements by public health agencies. This qualifies them to be defined as a broad charitable class. Following the guidance of VAN DUSEN v. COMMISSIONER | 136 T.C. 515 (2011), the board of directors and executive leadership of WHOMENTORSDOTCOM INC.., a nonprofit research organization--NAICS 5417/SIC: 8733--resolved to encourage volunteering in general by enrolled students, and, is announcing an invitation for up to 10,000 volunteers to be supervised informally as participants , to do what you like to do, as part of a remote development team for the 501(c)(3) organization.

Using the appropriate equipment, applicants can voluntarily create apps on for the Apple TV, iWatch, iPadOS, MacOS and iOS platforms in 26 categories: PC users can view the separate announcement for the Android remote development volunteer team,

Are you a self-paced, field-independent learner with an Apple desktop computer, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? Consider producing one concept per month (three total) before the end of 2020 calendar year. Each approved volunteer will receive a dedicated corporate email account.

The apps must adhere to the App Store Review Guidelines for nonprofit organizations (no in-app purchases and must be offered free to the public) and must be published in the name of the organization to prove you have rendered service, especially if you are eligible for the President's Volunteer Service Award or the Congressional Award (up to age 23). The projects may be referenced for your résumé without expiration provided the app isn't suspended for being outdated or violates standards for user experience (e.g., not maintained). WHOMENTORSDOTCOM INC. will consider requests to pay for full source code base or API access on a case-by-case basis.

Criteria:

Your participation must be focused on improving or developing your capabilities with respect to native iOS app development and UX/UI material design to accomplish an educational purpose while at the same time the solution should meet a recognized need and public benefit.  Apps directed to children must meet higher standards. Submission for publication is subject to approval by WHOMENTORSDOTCOM INC.. and is not guaranteed to be published, especially if the content or operation might jeopardize the 501(c)(3) status of WHOMENTORSDOTCOM INC.. To conform with the expectation of degree-granting institutions requirement to refrain from assessing fees of applicants., this activity does not qualify nonimmigrants with an employment authorization document (EAD) to maintain status as described by Service Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) Policy Guidance 1004-03, Update to Optional Practical Training (OPT), dated April 23, 2010. Be advised, at the beginning of your volunteer period, your self-enrichment education teacher and supervisor will listen to your civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons for wanting to volunteer and set out realistic objectives that you agree to complete before the end of the three month timeframe. At the conclusion, you will summarize what you learned in a report to be made available for the public.
