Magazine –Assistant Managing Editor – Internship

10+ hours/week
Picture This Post magazine,, alerts time-strapped readers to cultural offerings that are the best match for their interests in art, books, dance, film, museums, music, theater, as well as travel with a focus on culture. We not only cover culture creators and venues with high name recognition, but also delight in helping to showcase bold, creative strokes by fledgling artists in all genres.
As an Assistant Managing editor you will be part of the team that maintains all protocols to match staff with assignments. Your main focus will be on the big picture of the magazine. You will be in charge of keeping editing systems flowing, sending orientation and other guidelines to new staff members, keeping track of all volunteers and their positions, assigning posts for social media.
This job involves developing a working knowledge of multiple types of content on the magazine--- calendar entries, previews, interviews and roundup articles.  Prior to attending an initial volunteer orientation, you will be asked to do a guided study of this range of content in our magazine. Please begin this study now—checking out articles in every section of our magazine—(Note: Click a Picture to read a story; click LOAD MORE to find older stories)
This student volunteer position is designed to immerse you in the processes of online publication. While not listed as an “internship” position, most of our past and current student volunteers concur that the training and educational opportunities in this and other Picture This Post volunteer positions far exceeds that of most internship jobs. The more time you put into this experience the more you will get out of it. Many volunteers take on multiple roles and more responsibilities that give them more to show at the end of their time at Picture This Post – a fat portfolio of published articles among other lists of accomplishments.

- Commitment to fulfill tasks for all Picture This Post staff members—to remain in good standing (estimated time commitment of 30 – 60 minutes/week.) See EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS ALL STUDENT VOLUNTEERS

-Commitment to study and adhere to the Picture This Post Guidelines for Assignment Managers and other guidelines relevant to your role.
-Minimal time commitment of 10 hours/week--- except during exam and other highly demanding school schedules, which we EXPECT you to prioritize over your volunteer work.

Amy Munice, Editor in Chief, will be the primary supervisor of your internship. She is the co-publisher of the magazine, a 30+ year PR professional and freelance journalist, and cultural reporter who has penned many hundreds of articles. She will be the author of your future reference for job hunting purposes.

You will be responsible for keeping a to-do list updated in real time, and a cumulative report- -which if possible, we would prefer you also share with your school internship supervisor.

Training sessions are held by zoom—usually in small groups—throughout the week and weekend. Initially you will need to adapt your schedule in order to attend training sessions for your role in the soonest possible timeframe. Once you have the prerequisite skills, you determine your schedule each week in order to meet your school’s hour requirements for your internship.

Picture This Post is an entirely volunteer organization, from top to bottom. We are a not-for-profit (as opposed to a 501c3 non-profit) – too small to hire accountants etc. needed for non-profit status. Students are like all volunteers EXCEPT that much time/energy goes into training students and helping you develop a portfolio for future job hunting.

What You Will Do:
-Keep magazine and associated automation records of volunteers’ contact information, calendars and assigned areas up to date.
-Upload press releases to the Reader Calendar or assign these tasks to staff.
-You will monitor and manage tracking systems designed to move drafts to final edited form and eventual publication.
-You will make assignments to staff members – all volunteers—that allow for the timely publication of articles in our magazine and posting our content in social media.
-You will help maintain archives of final publication-ready versions of all articles that have completed the editing cycle.
-You will work on special projects in close association with the Editor-in-Chief, conferring frequently re: systems development and related to keep the magazine processes running smoothly.

Note: these miscellaneous tasks take about 30-60 minutes a week.
-You can add on to your Assistant Managing Editor role with other Picture This Post Jobs—your schedule permitting. **The top recommendation is to also get training to be a READER CALENDAR MANAGER.
